Since you’re staying so far out, Uber is the way. On the way back, though, if you want to save some money and long wait times, you can light rail from NRG to go to the northernmost Redline stop and Uber from there. The Uber wait times will probably be long after the game.

I would take light rail to Downtown or the Museum District and get the Uber there. The North end of the Red Line is pretty sketchy for out of towners.

For the rodeo we boarded the red line at Central Station Main and it took about 13 stops and maybe 1/2 hour to get to NRG. The train wasn't too crowded when we boarded there but filled up the closer we got to NRG. It's a nice area at Central Station Main, lots of restaurants, people out and about, and it felt very safe. Maybe take an Uber to a restaurant there or somewhere closer to NRG along the red line.

Great tips all around. Thanks to everyone for their suggestions. Looks like it's going to be Lyft on the way there. I completely agree that it's going to be a madhouse getting out of there and love the suggestion of taking light rail to get out of there and then Uber from the station.

I got here too late,
But I’ve been at the northern most station on the light rail and that area doesn’t feel very safe,
I feel much safer in downtown

Driving was the best option yesterday, go ahead and fork over that $50 and enjoy yourself. Traffic wasn't that bad.
