I am considering moving from Honolulu to a city on the mainland. I like the idea of Houston but the wife wants me to inquire on whether there is a strong asian (Japanese specifically) population in Houston. She is a Japanese national and we're trying to raise our children in both cultures.

Lots of Asians in Houston, especially Alief, SW, Sugar Land Area. Vietnamese are the largest sub-group, I am not familiar with a specific area of Japanese, but I know there is at least one Japanese grocery.

My wife is japanese and she frequents this mixi.jp (something like that) website and she found some sort of 'Japanese wives club' in Houston. She enjoys that club very much checking out restaurants and chit chatting about life here and back home. She also met Japanese people working with AIG International Services. I believe all her Japanese friends are from Sugarland, Katy and one west of the Beltway near NipponDaido

Sugarland has been losing a few mom&pop japanese sushi shops because of the whole masterplan shopping areas having big and expensive units. Lucky for us folks in Alief they setup shops here (still live in Sugarland)

Asian population is quite sizable in Clear Lake as well, within the Houston city limits.

Adjacent Webster has a bit of Japanese history... unsure of how large the population is nowadays:

a lot of your statements lead me to believe that there really are not a lot of Japanese here. Clubs and stuff... that just goes to show the rarity.
