I am also from Michigan and interested in moving to Houston. Where in MI are you from?

I'm from Michigan and moved to the Clear Lake area a year and a half ago. One of our major concerns was schools so we made sure to stay in the Clear Creek ISD. Also, the Friendswood ISD is well respected. We are paying less for car insurance here than in Michigan. Utilities are similar... you pay a lot to run air conditioning during the summer, but you pay a lot in Michigan for heat in the winter so it evens out. Property taxes are higher, but there is no state income tax which helps. Property tax rates vary greatly from area to area, and even vary within the same subdivision. If you're looking to buy a house, then check out HAR.com and check out houses in different subdivisions. That way you can click on the subdivision and check out the tax rates for that subdivision. Another thing to check out are the flood maps so you know where not to live... these can obviously affect your insurance costs: TSARP Interactive Mapping Tool (http://maps2.tsarp.org/tsarp/ - broken link)

What's your price range? Clear Lake City @ Space Center Blvd is a good area. Look on HAR.com for neighborhoods: Bay Knoll, Bay Glen, Bay Pointe, Bay Forest, Bay Oaks, Northfork. Property taxes are around 2.9%. During non-peak traffic, it's about 20 mins from Seabrook/Kemah and 25 mins from downtown.

We are moving next month and I think we will be in the Spring Branch area. Good luck with your move-we will be renting an apt to start out with me.
