"Winter" is relatively mild in Houston, cold only on occasion, but the outdoors are very usable during this time.

It was "relatively" cold for me, moving here from Southern California.
Probably you will find it "relatively" mild.
I do think that Houston's winter was colder than I expected, but still, not that cold.

You never can tell. It snowed (for the 1st time in 10 years) on Christmas Eve a few years ago, and the next year I was wearing short sleeves.

Houston Has:
Two Springs: Feb-Early May and Mid-October-December.
One Fall: December-Feb.
One Freaking Hot Summer: June-Mid-October
On average about ONE week of Winter: Usually around the last week of December or somewhere in the first two weeks of January.

Second spring? I guess you mean that's when the plants and native grasses that turned brown during the Freaking Hot Summer turn green again. I never thought of it that way... good way to describe it!

Icestorms are rare, snow is rare and like Supermac mentioned, days that you can't play golf or do anything else outdoors are few and far between. It's usually quite pleasant. I can even recall some highs up around 80 in January, but that's not very common either.

People here whine when it's hot too. People are going to whine no matter what. It's in their nature. Hell, you can have perfect weather in a place like SoCal and people find a reason to whine. Anyway, I can think of a lot worse places to be in the winter than Houston.

This is encouraging. Sounds very California.

Being a lifelong resident of SETX, I always wished for four real seasons, but of course, I accept whatever we get. Since we really don't have a winter, on the 3 or 4 days during the year it does get "cold", I purposly go without a coat, just to sort of experience it. That may sound unusual, but I enjoy just a little taste of "winter" that way.

I have been up high in the Colorado mountains in January, and those who whine about the Houston winter ought to experience 5 degrees and a 40 mph wind for 12 straight hours!
