My husband and I are planning on moving to Texas, due to his job. We don't want to move to Houston, but have looked into Katy TX. So far it sounds like a pretty nice place. My concern is, I am Mexican and it looks like the population of Katy is mostly white. Will I have any problems with the local people. I have read some blogs on Houston and most of the locals think all Mexicans are illegal emigrant and have little respect for the Hispanics. Is this true in Katy or any of the other out lying areas.

Katy is kind of a mixed bag (Indians, Asians, northerners, and typical Texas suburbanistes) but there are enough Hispanics there, and in most Texas cities, that people don't just assume that a Hispanic person is illegal - especially if he or she speaks English.

You have a wrong impression. Be a good citizen and you'll be respected. The chance of running into a bigot is always there but you just have to be "bigger" than that type attitude!

The demographic information of Katy describes a small area. There is a difference between Katy and "Katy Area." Much of Katy Area (unincorporated) is professionals living in the suburbs. If you have enough money to move there, I doubt there will be much problem. There isn't nearly as much anti-Hispanic sentiment in the Houston area as there is in North Texas. The city of Houston is nearly 40% Hispanic not including the "undocumented." If you're a good citizen who is not looking at moving into the trailer park, you probably won't have any issues.

I'm Hispanic and I loved Katy. Then again, I'm pretty, as they say, "white washed." To be honest with you, most of the Hispanic people I know in Katy are more like culturally American Mestizos at this point.

Off topic but does Katy have a hair salon on the main highway that's inside an old red train caboose? I was driving through texas 5 yrs ago and took pictures of such a place and the sign on the business simply said Katy. Always wondered if that was Katy, Texas.

Most of the Black and Asian kids are "White washed", too. Trust me. Though, this is only true South of I-10 really. North of I-10 is different. Still, most people out here are color-blind.

Hmmm, interesting terminology. I've never heard of "white washed" what does it mean? That is truely a new one for me.

^White-washed in this context = Americanized, suburban "culture." No matter their race or ethnicity, they all talk the same, walk the same, look the same, dress the same, watch the same movies, listen to the same music... you get the idea. This is true of all Houston's suburbs, though, not just Katy. It's a class thing rather than a race thing.
