What kind of people afford those mansions? They cant all be lottery winners. I heard quite a few Houston Rockets live in that area. Even some of the highest paying jobs would not allow the average Joe to live in those castles. They all cant be lawyers and doctors.

Am I jealous of those rich slobs? Yup.

Ya know what? The sad part is some of those people dont work for a living. They were either born with the silver spoon in their mouth or inherrited it.

Jfr do you shoe leather express it all over town? Seems like you go on quite a few picture taking excursions. I wonder if you are a photographer.

Love all the pics!!!!!

You covered a lot of ground on your walk, as I'm a former resident of 'the 019'. I'm surprised the RO security detail didn't stop to ask why you were photographing houses. Should have had a Pizza at the pub, they do a good job on those.

If you want to see areas in transition, I would say the east side of the ballpark, or my new hood-Houston Ave north of the police station.

Fantastic pics! Some of those mansions are definitely huge. I've always heard that River Oaks is the "Beverly Hills" of Houston and I can certainly see why.

RO Patrol was all over the place, they saw me, and they had nothing to say. Which is fine and good, since there's nothing they can legally do about me standing on public streets and sidewalks taking pictures. Hell, one of them backed up to make way for me at a crosswalk on San Felipe. Don't know if he saw the camera in my hand, not that I was making a conscious attempt to be stealthy with it (I can hold it in my palm in such a manner it would take a really good eye to spot it if at all)

I had no problems out there. Not even a little bit. Except for that whole heat thing and the elusive frozen lemonade I could never find. Worse than the heat is that I did too much walking for the day after about a month since my last proper long-distance walk. Hopefully I'll be back to normal by Friday, and it seems the East End is calling my name...

Sort of.

Real photographers use real gear though. They'll be putting cameras like this in cereal boxes before long.

I did dabble in photography while working at a newspaper a few years ago.

You are a good man for enduring all of the heat and taking those beautiful photos. All I have to say is THANK YOU!

Also a few reputation points as well.

Nice pictures, thanks for sharing! I remember driving around in that area and some others like it while visiting last Summer. I'm really going to enjoy exploring the city when I live there.

My guess is most of the people who live in those houses not only work for a living, they probably work really hard for a living. They also probably worked really hard in high school to get in to university where they worked really hard during their four years of undergrad college, and 3-7 more years in their graduate school programs. With two incomes of post graduate degree holding professionals, those houses become affordable.

I live in a working class neighborhood (Fondren Southwest) and work for a non-profit, so I'm not taking this personally. I just don't understand why people assume someone is doing something wrong because they have money any more than I understand why some assume people are doing something wrong because they don't have money.

I was looking for a picture of River Oaks Country Club!

Absolutely agree with rb4browns. People work hard everywhere -- it's just a different sort of hard. Whereas someone might work hard on their feet all day at McDonald's, another might work hard in board rooms, during flights, in their hotel rooms... Sometimes your uniform has yellow and red clown stripes, and other times your uniform may include a fabric noose tied tight around your neck, and long sleeved shirt, and jacket, no matter the weather... Make your own luck, stay in school!

That said, appreciate all the pics. I can't believe you walked around in the heat in a black t-shirt though
