I am a good driver with Progressive liability insurance. It just went up by 18%. I read a month ago that insurers raised rates in Harris County for home insurance but heard nothing about car insurance.

Yep, my rate with Progressive went up too.
I don't recall how much it went up, but it was enough for me to switch to AAA.

Our policy with USAA just renewed last month. No rate increase here.

I would dump Progressive. I was a good driver with them for 12 years. I took a defensive driving course last Sept and they would not honor it or give me a discount for taking it like almost every other car insurance company will do. I bought a new car this month and checked out Geico and for the exact same amount I was paying for my 1997 Honda I am now paying for my 2009 Honda with slightly more coverage. They also honored my defensive driving course.

I get my renewal in a few days; thanks for the heads-up.

Progressive is by far the cheapest I've found. Full coverage on two vehicles ages 4 & 6 was somewhere around $600 the last 6 months. The next best was Geico for about $750.

Progressive is exceedingly heavy on the credit score so see if they pulled it to re-evaluate your premium. If so, check your report for errors. They also give huge discounts if you pay in full every 6 months.

Nationwide is pretty reasonable.

I also paid 6 months in full with Progressive. I had zero wrecks or speeding tickets not to mention any claims the entire time I was with Progressive and although they were pretty cheap I just out of curiosity decided to see what rates I could get for my new car with Geico. They gave nice discounts such as:

22.20 for Passive Restraint
12.90 for Anti-Theft Device
11.70 for Anti-Lock Brakes
64.00 for 5 Year Good Driver
60.00 for taking defensive driving - Progressive would not even honor this at all!

A total of 170.80 and I only paid 588.00 with full coverage for the 6 month policy on a new 2009 Honda!

For the 6 months with Progressive with full coverage I paid 544.50 on a 1997 Honda!

It is certainly worth going online and seeing how much you could save with other companies.

Yeah right.
Just try to actually make a claim with Nationwide.
My wife used to be with Nationwide and was rear ended by an 18 wheeler while 7 months pregnant with our first child on the Katy Freeway.
Thankfully baby and wife were okay, but several agents with Nationwide were completely worthless and made the situation even more stressful.
They never answered phone calls and voice mails.
I will NEVER ever go with Nationwide again.

My rates didn't go up - I have Geico and just renewed last week. I pay 6 months in full and have the anti-theft, anti-lock brakes, 5 year good driver, and defensive driving discounts.
Geico offers great discount options, but they max out - I could get more through my employer as well as an organization I am a member of, but I reached a limit.
I also have nice coverage amounts and a low deductible (plus had a pretty decent claim a few months ago).

I had Progressive previously, but Geico's rates were much better. I was happy with Progressive's service, though. I was also pleased with my Geico claim too, though..

Ok update, got the renewal from Progressive. The premium went down from 594 to 580. Same cars & coverage as above. So DavidT, not sure what's going on with yours.
