Oh, forgot to tell you Webster/Friendswood area are suburbs of Houston! Our fist home cost $96,000 in 2002.

Yes. You can do just fine on that income. You don't necessarily have to rent an apartment. I live in Katy and rent a duplex for $800 per month, 2 bedroom 1400 sq. ft. I will be buying a house out here but wanted to live here for a while to get a feel for the area.

I currently live off of Morton Rd near Fry. I'm not too fond of living off of Hwy 6. I don't like the traffic. But there is nothing wrong with the area. I like this area from Fry to W. Little York (I'm not sure what part it's considered....all that Old Katy, New Katy stuff I hear about all the time. I'm not from Houston so it's all new to me , not too much going on but close enough to get to Hwy 6, I-10 and every other store within 10 mins. I've found I prefer areas with alot of subdivisons. It's pretty quite and close enough to access anything I need.

Where are you looking in Katy Texas User?

Texas User,

thanks for keeping this thread alive. I think you've added a lot of value to this thread and given me much to consider.

When I first moved to Houston in 2001, I made $27K a year, and had plenty to spare. Now, I was living in a less than desirable neighborhood, but I made due just fine as a single guy.

Now, I am married, moved back to Sugar Land in April, and am making a bit more than that. Still happy, and realizing as long as you have friends and God, everything else will work out fine!

What about your spouse's salary? Any kids?

If both made $27K a year, I think you can still live in SL without kids and debt.

I am double that now, and spouse currently doesn't work. We are more than happy, debt free, and blessed. God is good. SL, while catering to higher income families, doesn't exclude you if you make a little less.
