i consider outlaying communities part of Houston. (woodlands, sugarland, etc.) Anything that has a major 2 or 3 lane freeway attached with a constant stream of businesses (no farm area)

I think this will boost the number to 3.2 to 3.3 million at least.

I thought it came out a couple of years ago that the entire Houston Metro area pop. was closer to 5 million?

When then you're talking metro areas instead of municipality. So in essence, you can't do that. But the entire Houston metro area is close to 6 million. As of July 1, 2008, the metro area is at 5.8 million.

Probably down some as much of the cheap labor has left for a while. But I thought the greater Houston area had about 5 million.
