Where in Houston are you, and what kind of work are you looking for? I was driving over near the new Pearland Town Center development (right off of 288 and 518) today and saw tons of new businesses with NOW HIRING signs.

Mostly retail/customer service, but if you're in a pinch for cash, I recommend looking over there.

Go to NorthWest Bible Church and click on the "Between Jobs Ministry" link. This is a Christian based job resource program that allows you to network with a lot of people, for a lot of different types of jobs.

An excellent resource. I have heard many great things about this ministry. Make sure you go to the wednesday sessions. They are the most important part. And be sure to have the mentality of serving others rather than looking for something. If you look out for others, they will look out for you.

Heck, in about 6 weeks my wife and I will be using this resource as we will finally be HOUSTON RESIDENTS!!!!

I think it would be good to avail yourself of whatever life skills counseling/training help the church offers along with their job finding assistance. It sounds like you might need some guidance and mentoring on some strategic life skills. Generally speaking, because I don't know your specific circumstances, moving to a new city (especially as a single parent) and not having a job search plan beyond looking on some internet job boards is a dangerous idea.
