Can anyone tell me how much heating a salt water pool will increase monthly cost?

I guess it would depend on the size and depth of your pool..but here is one chart:

Pool Heater Questions

I know our next door neighbor heats his pool in Nov for just a weekend for his daughters B-day....He said it is extremely expensive...running into hundreds depending on the current weather. His pool is relatively small and only deepest at 5 ft.

I might also add...that was just to raise the temp. to a comfortable swimming temp. and did not include maintaining that temp.

depends if your heater is gas or electric. Mine is gas and to get it swimming temp (for me 85) after the winter takes several hundred dollars to maintain for a weekend.
large pool w/ depth 4 to10ft

When I lived in Canada, a lot of people had rubber hoses on their roofs connected to a small pump that circluated pool water through the hoses slowly to naturally heat the pool for virtually no $. I've not seen a set up like that here- but we are certainly in a perfect climate for it.

We have a solar heater and a solar pool blanket. After the initial cost, no more money. The blanket looks like gaint bubble wrap. Neither is enough to heat the water in the winter but in the spring when the suns starts to shine we can raise the temp 2 degrees a day. We start swimming at least a month earlier than before. (We have a lot of trees so the water doesn't get a lot of direct light.) I also read that the solar blanket does a great job of retaining heat if you use it with a gas heater.

We have a gas 400 btu heater and a pool with 20K gallons. It takes 1 hour to heat the pool 1 degree and I believe the cost is around $2.50 per btu/hour. So if I need to heat the pool 10 degrees it will cost $25 more or less. I did this calculations last year. It also depends on the current cost of gas.

Thank you so much for the responses. A lot of helpful information to sort through now. Hope to be swimming occasionally throughout the winter.....if I can afford it.

You can always invest in a wet-suit!

Heaters are more for taking the chill off in the spring, or extending the fall season into November. True "winter" swimming is very costly. But if you have a hot tub on the pool, it's not too bad.

Uhh, I think I will stay in the hot tub until I purchase a heater....no wet suit for me Shelbygirl, although my husband and son might put theirs on and pretend to be scuba diving. LOL
