The 3 dems are all in the high 20s and very close - it's going to be a runoff election in december.

Why to the repubs even bother running?

Political parties don't mean nearly as much in local elections as they do nationally. Local elections are officially nonpartisan. I wish they all were.

Well, they could still show what's going on at the bottom of the screen. I don't even see that anywhere.

Anyone's better than Bill White.
Honestly I haven't paid much attention to Mayors this year. Pick one, it can't get any worse/

I don't know why we have parties in local races here in Houston. It is a relatively recent thing and it doesn't seem to matter that much in any event.

In any case, I don't think either national party is going to throw a celebration just because their guy/gal won in Houston. The national parties seemed to be concerned more over the battlegrounds in New Jersey and Virginia where they pumped a lot of money in, and the Democrats in particular called out the big guns to wave the flag. The Virginia governor's race has already been called in favor of the Republican candidate by a large margin and the Republican candidate for governor in New Jersey is ahead and pulling away from Governor Carzine.

As for Bill White, my criticism of the man is his waffling, middle-of-the-road-afraid-to-take-a-real-stance position on local action against illegal aliens who commit criminal acts. That, and he hasn't done much to fix the funding issues for all of the different employee pension funds. He inherited a big debt because the Brown administration screwed him (and the pension funds) but his fix is weak and fragile and if that situation doesn't get fixed the city is in for a hell of a bill to pay.
