No, this was in the early 80s, and those systems were rare for anyone but the rich back then. We just locked things up the best we could, and went off to work.

WOw guys thanks for all the input.

I live on Third floor, from my apartment they took 6000 dollars worth of stuff. I was also thinking abt moving into different apartment in same complex. but do u think security alarm and renters would help?

I have often been surprised, when I lock myself out, how easy it use to be to get in. Not any more. I have to call a lock smith. Now days, since you tube was good enough to show how to make a "bump key" it's pretty easy to just unlock the door, and come on in.

An alarm system helps to catch the perps in the act. Insurance helps with the replacement of stolen items if the alarm fails. The cost of both should be a few hundred bucks a year. Unfortunately, it's the price you have to pay for peace of mind. You don't have to be Fort Knox - just safe enough to persuade any perps to move along to the next apartment. Depending on how it's set up, the alarm can serve a dual purpose - apart from getting cops to show up if there's a break-in, it also lets you know if or when apartment complex personnel are letting themselves into your apartment.

With the advent of tools for unforced entry, I suspect the triggering of an alarm, together with a police report, may help with insurance claims, given that adjusters tend to be leery of claims involving no signs of forced entry.
