Is there anything refreshing in Houston's live music scene?

So far, it has been very hard to find anything interesting for me.

I don't want to go to any stadium or theater or anything large. I'm looking for some good, informal/semi-formal live music in a smaller place that is decent, and perhaps new.

I am really not interested in Christmas songs or Bach so I will skip the symphony. Little places like Super Happy Funland and Walter's on Washington are more for teenagers with garage bands. It seems like most of the jazz places here play stuff that you would hear in an elevator. I'm definitely not into the local rap scene.

A lot of bars that actually have live music seem to just have some generic, cheap cover band playing something like Kiss songs. Some places have local aging hippies with pyschedelic blues but I can't say I'm into that.

One of the more interesting things to me was the live country music at Hickory Hollow on the weekends. Anyone know anything about some good, old time country? I would hope that Houston would still have some kind of community for that.

Also, some good live Mexican music would be cool, but not some mariachis at a Mexican restaurant. It seems most Mexicans here are from the north and I know they have different music than that.

Houston definitely doesn't seem to have much good musical entertainment to me, which is really sad. Do you have any experiences with this? Any recommendations?

Going through your post and seeing how many times you said negative words like "can't", "not" or "don't" I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that the answer to your first question is a resounding no as well.
Being a musician, there are plenty of things that I like and dislike, but music is about exploration. If you don't explore, nothing will ever be "refreshing." I think they should really start implenting music lessons in schools to help people who haven't a clue about music.

I am a professional musician here in Houston, and having played in cities all over the country, I can tell you that pretty much anything you can find anywhere in the U.S., you can find here if you look for it.
Your post is mostly about what you don't like, and very little about what you DO like.
Mexican music, but not mariachi.... salsa, tejano? This is one of the best cities in the world for that. If you can't find it, you're not looking. If you're not hispanic though, you might feel a little out of place at those venues.
Old time country.... it's out there, you might have to look at venues in some of the outlying communities. The inner loop crowd doesn't really go wild for George Jones etc.
What kind of jazz are you looking for? Smooth (non) jazz? Straight ahead? Avante Garde? There are venues for every conceivable type.

We've been to Caps Piano Bar off Westheimer, it's behind The House of Pies...... great live jazz. It's an unusual crowd, but fun! Nothing fancy, it's just an old school 60's strip mall with good live music.

Go to Firehouse Saloon if you want country. Maybe Blanco's.
FIREHOUSE SALOON :: HOUSTON, TEXAS

I'm more of a rock and roll guy so I like Warehouse Live, Maridian, The Mink, Rudyards, and Fitzaralds.

Cajun - Jax and Mardi Gras

Not sure about Mexican music, but I know its out there.

Do you know where any live Mexican music is? I don't, and I'm Hispanic and yes I've looked.

It's not as if there are just bands performing all over the place here.

also, instead of just saying "there are venues for this and that" could you possibly list any of these venues?

I've lived in Houston my entire life and I've yet to see such a wide assortment of venues here as you do in other large cities.

Well contrary to what seems to be your belief I have been to a lot of places with music in Houston. That is actually how I came to make my judgement.

It's not like this city is just full of hidden, small and intimate music venues. I've lived here my entire life and I know that it certainly isn't.
