No, seat belts and car seats are for sissies and Californians. This is Texas, you're good to go, so stuff that CRV with the bambinos and shop shop shop!

Here's some info for you: Texas Department of Public Safety - Texas Occupant Restraint Laws

Children under 8 are required to be in a child safety seat. Children under 17 are required to be restrained by a seat belt.

edit: I should add, if you are thinking about driving around with an unrestrained child, my wife is a PICU nurse at the med center and would be happy to give you a tour of the consequences.

If it has 7 seats, I presume it has 7 seatbelts.... so as long as the kids have their car seats, it shouldn't be a problem.

when we had friends with a toddler visit we bought a car seat and then just returned it a few days later when they left.

Texas Car Seat Laws - Child Passenger Safety Laws and Seat Belt Laws in Texas - State Car Seat Laws

Depending on age and weight, children are required by law to be a car seat, booster seat or seat belt.

Is it worth the price of a ticket or worse, the life of a child?
You can rent a seat at any car rental business...just call ahead.

Yes we did the same after we flew home to visit the grandparents. They just returned it after we left.

Can I say I love you....(speaking as a nurse to a nurse's spouse!!)?!

To the OP: First: How old are the children? Second: why would you want to cram 6 people in a 5 seater vehicle? That means someone's left without a seatbelt. If you plan on renting a vehicle that will be LEGAL for you all to ride in, why not use that on the short trips as well. Keeping in mind that the majority of accidents happen close to home. While driving TO the galleria may a short trip, the traffic in and around the galleria is hideous. And if you were to get in an accident, do you really want to face the consequences of potentially harming someone, and getting a child endangerment charge?? All to save a little $$$? Just rent the 7 seater vehicle and a car seat for the other kiddo and you will be all set. And as a parent, I am really suprised that the parents of the other child would even consider not restraining their child while in a vehicle - no matter how short the trip.
