I'm posting this here because of the relationship between Houston's economy and NASA but feel free to move it...

Came across this article:
Obama Budget Plan Grounds NASA Despite Increased Funding - TIME

Do people care about NASA and what they do? Is the research done and knowledge gained in space missions worth the taxpayer dollars pumped into the agency? The budget given to the agency is about 18 billion a year. Scrapping the agency would allow those funds to be used for perhaps more tangible "here and now" items such as education or paying down debt but 18 billion is such a small number in comparison to the overall federal budget. Anyway, is NASA on its way out in the next 20 years in its current form? How would that affect Houston?

If Obama cuts federal funding to NASA I'll surely be pissed.

Houston is SPACE CITY & where space travel all began. Good work continues to be done in outer space. The recent find of water on Mars & the Moon further proves that & paves the way for future missions...possibly sustainable life for human colonization. I'm sure people thought Christopher Columbus was nuts & we wouldn't be here today if he hadn't found America.

Well if you read the article Obama actually increased funding for NASA but the money will go to research rather than wasted on rockets to carry people to the moon for no apparent reason.

Yeah, sure, lets continue to fall behind the rest of the world in space travel while we sit our asses on the ISS observing the same animals over & over again for the same ****.

That's some progressive "Change", let me tell ya.

Bush proposed some wonderful things Obama is just letting slip away into the hands of our allies.

If the Earth would cease to exist tomorrow, wouldn't you have some faith a Moon or Mars colonization would continue to breathe human life?

We don't need it, nor does Houston need it. What about developing better engines? So that it won't take a billion years to get to the Mars
Why would Americans care what the rest of the world is doing?

Anyway, I think it will have NO impact on Houston at all.

I would suggest you speak to someone who works for, or supports NASA in Houston in some way. Better yet, I'm sure they will give their opinion in due time.

No impact on Houston? Try thousands of jobs lost at JSC.

Did you guys actually read it? Looks like you did not. Nowhere it says that NASA will be closed. Then you might have been right. They will still be working, it's just gonna be something else Sorry, I don't see it.

The station was proposed in 1984 and has been under construction since 1998, and so far not a lick of truly valuable science has come from it.

That's what they can work on.

NASA? is that still around?
Thats right, they should just use those scientists to develop a new automobile engine.

Sure, NASA won't close its doors, but to deny the fact it will take jobs away from the region is absurd & not thinking clearly.

We already have "green" technology in today's production engines, its called hybrid & cylinder management. Heck, my girlfriends Toyota gets 40 mpg & its not even a hybrid!

What do YOU, XodoX & SteveArmy do to help reduce US oil consumption & dependence? Got any ideas for an engine that hasn't been though up yet?
