My current term expires 5/7/2010. Does it usually take 4-6 weeks to wait for a meter reading date to finish switch？ The service contract states the termination fee will be waived if switch occurs within 14 days of contract expiration date. Is it safe to do the switch online now?

I'm not 100% sure, but I believe the switch happens the next time Centerpoint reads your meter. If you call Centerpoint, they will tell you the next time your meter is scheduled to be read. Also, I believe you can pay a fee to have your meter read inbetween the times they would normally read it.

Another tip, you might call your current provider and see what rate they will give you to renew your contract another year. I did that and ended up with a better rate than the rates they were advertising on their website and lower than any rate on PowerToChoose.org. Then you don't have to worry about timing a switch

Amen. I can almost guarantee that if you call to CANCEL your contract, you'll be offered a better deal. Examples from my personal experience: (1) called to cancel my daughter's Sprint contract and they routed me off to someone who offered me such a good deal, that it took 5 years before general rate reductions in the cell phone world made it worth changing. She kept using an old, beat-up and outdated phone because her rate was so good. (2) Called Brinks/Broadview once to cancel my contract for no other reason than it was too expensive. They offered me a 40% rate reduction if I would commit to another year. I now use Smith-Thompson, which beats ALL the other alarm providers, but didn't know about them at that time.
