Hi, I lived in Houston years ago, I'm a single mother looking to move back to Houston (from Chicago). I'm an Executive Assistant and will move without having a job, I will be living with my friend in Katy until I get a job, find a safe apartment complex that is children friendly. I plan in looking for a job in the Energy Corridor, Katy and frankly, no further than Galleria (but hope to find something closer). A short commute is important, as I'll need to pick up my daughter from school. I would like to find a place surrounded by green areas, trees, a pool, with w/d and clean. But SAFETY and and elementary school close by are vital as well. I'm looking to pay no more than $975.00, any suggestions and feedback is greatly appreciated.

When we were doing a relo from Louisiana, our corporate apartment was at San Paloma on Eldridge. While the noise bothered us (we had a ground floor apartment, and the people above us LOVED to vacuum at all hours of the day and night), we felt very safe in this complex. It's definitely in the Energy Corridor. DH commuted to work in the Galleria area, and in the morning, it took him about 20 minutes to go 11 miles right down Briar Forest to San Felipe Plaza where his offices were located. We stayed in essentially the same area - we bought a townhouse at Richmond and Windchase. LOVE the Homegoods, TJMaxx and SuperTarget at Westheimer/Richmond/Eldridge.

I would suggest Kingston Villas or The Vineyards. Both are close to I-10 and buses pick up the kids from the apartments complexes.

In addition, both have pools. I think one has more than one pool actually.

Both are close to shopping. There's a Wal Mart, Fiesta, Randall's, H.E.B, CVS, Walgreens, and other stores within a mile or two, along with many chain restaurants like Chipotle, Chick-fil-A, Arby's, and Whataburger.

Kingston Villas*- home | Apartments - Katy, TX

Vineyards*- home | Apartments - Katy, TX (http://vineyardsapts.com/home.asp - broken link)

Also, both of them are gated. I know that the Vineyards has recently been repainted too.

I lived in Lakes at cinco ranch for 7 months while my house was being built. I'd recommend it if it is in your price range. It is extremely convenient to all kind of shopping and activities.

Thank you to all of you. Please new readers, keep on sending your feedback. I'm also willing to hear if there is a safe, nice apartment community, with a good elementary school in other more central areas o Houston - I use to live off West Alabama and Midlane - which I know now is a very expensive. (was then, just happened to find a great deal). I cannot pay more than $975.00 per month. Safety, schools and shopping nearby are all important. Thank you!

You can find plenty of apartments in the Katy area for your price range..especially because there are apartment complexes really dying for business due to the housing market.

Cinco Ranch area in Katy is very nice, good schools and very clean. Crime rate is low. My friend lives at the Downs at Cinco Ranch and she only pays $895 for her two bedroom because she got a good rate back in January. That is saving $500 or more a month!!! (she also moved from Chicago!)

So look around and don't settle for the prices here...everything will seem much cheaper versus Chicago...

Your child will like it here because Katy is very focused on children and is very family oriented.

Good luck!
