can anybody recommend a home insulation company? My house' second floor is unbearably hot. I want to see if there's anything I can do to fix that.

I have recently used payless insulation for my home.. went up to R38 and they did a great job at a fair price. They had good ratings on Angieslist and are one of the larger providers I believe around this area.

Just curious, but don't you have a separate A/C unit for your second floor? Do you have radiant barrier decking in the attic? How about having a thermostat controlled exhaust fan (or two) installed near the peak of your roof to pull out the hot air?

Does your attic have insulation at all? Is it on the attic ceiling or floors? Your problem is pretty common in many homes, especially in Houston's hot heat.

You can try an attic fan, they have some neat solar powered ones at Sams. Adding insulation would definitely help.

Second Payless Insulation. Fairly-priced, good product, good installers.

Be sure the contractor properly prepares the attic. They need to religiously protect the air intakes in the soffit and keep insulation away from the HVAC with some kind of baffling. Any can lights in the attic need to have some kind of cylinder surrounding them to keep away the insulation. The guys who installed ours even put plywood around the attic stairway. Proper preparation sometimes takes longer than blowing it in.

I used Stevenson insulation a few years ago and they did a good job. The owner and his assistant do the work them selves. Make sure to use fiberglass and not the cellulose junk that breaks down after a while and is ruined if it gets wet.
