Hal Greer Blvd is being widened all of the way to the viaduct and they are planning to tear down at least some of the government housing. New housing will be built east of there and less concentrated. The Hal Greer area is now being planned for redevelopment with new businesses, etc. This is GREAT news!
Tim, I'm not trying to butt into your discussion but I do want mention one word of caution here. They did much the same thing in Wheeling a few years ago. They dismantled the Vinyard Hills housing project and replaced it with new houses sold to lower income folks at subsidized rates. The only problem was they didn't have enough new housing for all the former residents, and those folks were dispersed to other areas of the town.
One thing about housing projects... good or bad they concentrate most of the problems in one area where they are comparitively easier to manage. When those former residents go to other areas, places that never experienced problems before now have crime issues... breakins, drug sales, violence and a feeling it is not safe to venture out after dark. Just sayin', there are some negatives with doing away with them. Hal Greer might indeed get a nice facelift, but there could be a cost associated with that elsewhere.
I've thought about that before and I agree that you have to be careful, but it looks like Huntington leaders already have a plan to replace all of the units. They are doing it in parts of town that have more trouble with dilapidated housing and the crime that follows that. So with this one project, they are getting some of the older units off of Hal Greer, bringing in more commercial development to that area and replacing dilapidated housing in other areas. This could be a huge catalyst for that area.
This facelift has been needed for several decades now. Lets hope the hurdles are kept at a minimum so that this project gets completed. Nice affordable housing, both homes, apartments and townhomes, are needed if the Huntington area has any chance at rebounding in the future.
Still waiting on demolition of Northcott Court, it seems like it is taking so long for them to get started on this. I hope that it happens soon. It will be great for Hal Greer Blvd development. Speaking of, does anyone know what type of businesses specifically may be interested in locating there? I know they have mentioned a grocery store or something of that nature. Anything solid at this point?
Looks like the government shut down and a clerical error have delayed things. Demolition may start by the beginning of the year if all works out though.
