I was looking online at the several parks in Huntington. We have small childen. Are there any parks or areas (such as rotary park or riverfront) that we should avoid? I dont know much about these areas or the other parks other than what I've read online.
For a couple with children, Ritter Park can not be beat! Riverfront park used to have a bum population a few years ago (tent city) but they forced them out of there. Rotary Park doesn't really offer much but does have some awesome walking paths, But I think your family will really love Ritter Park. Dotted with trees hundreds of years old, large area where your kids and can around, there is also some new playground equipment, a small stream goes through it and ducks can usually be seen. It is just the best park in this area hands down.
When people refer to the "riverfront" is this the same as the Harris Riverfront or are they different?
I noticed also that Huntington has alot of festivals. Are the majority of these held at the riverfront or where are they held? We're excited about the festivals like chili, BBQue, greek and all the others.
When people say riverfront park in Huntington, we are indeed referring to Harris Riverfront Park. This is a nice park that has become even nicer over the last couple of years with more plans for improvement in the works. And GHO is right, Ritter Park is definately the best park with a nice walking/jogging/bike path, beautiful rose garden, several nice playgrounds (the main playground expansion is to be finished in a couple of months) and lots of open spaces. The fairs/festivals are held in different places around town. Some are at the riverfront, some are at Ritter Park, others at Pullman Square, Central City area has its own festival and some (like the Greek Fest) are held at the building that the group putting on the festival owns. If you still plan on being in Barboursville, the city park there is also very nice. Lots of land there as it used to be one of the state owned farms. It just doesn't have the atmosphere that Ritter Park provides though. Hope this helps.
