Need some housing and area expertise from the locals. Im looking at a great place on 8th ave and 3rd street. It's reasonably priced and beautiful. Unfortunately, I dont know much about the area. Ive been told by the current residents that the house across the street is low income housing. As a single woman, this makes me nervous regarding the safety, especially since the area has no streetlights (1 per 2-3 blocks). Does any one know anything about the 8th ave and 2nd street area? Is it considered west end? It's next to the tracks.

There are some very nice houses over in that area but you might want to move a little farther from the tracks. With Huntington being a rail town, the trains go through quite often and I'd imagine that the noise and dust/grime from the trains would make the house a little less desireable. 1st St is the the cut-off for being West Huntington so if it's on the west side of 1st St, then it is west Huntington. The area overall though is pretty nice, especially around the new elementary and middle school. You'd be close to the park, close to Kroger and close to downtown. Sometimes, one of the best things to do is to ask the neighbors their thoughts. Also, drive around at different times of the day and see what the noise levels are like. Also, be certain that there aren't more street lights in place. There are usually 2 per block but sometimes the lights are just out. If that's the case, all you have to do is call the power company.

I'll drive around today and take a closer look at the area you're talking about. My wife and I looked at some houses on 9th Ave in that area and they were very nice, just not quite what we were looking for. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the help and suggestions. I'm fine with the train, the noise level isn't bad and Im using to track noise. The only thing keeping me from snapping up this house right away is the low income housing complex across the street. That coupled with the lack of adequate lighting at night makes me feel that the area is unsafe. There have been car break in's. Not sure about house break ins.

My recommendation would still be to look a few streets over on 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th Avenues, especially if you have any reservations. You can find some nice houses at good prices over on those streets and won't have to feel like you are taking a risk. Ultimately though, the choice is yours. Hope this helps.
