What is the best playground in the area? We have an 9 month old and a 3 year old and would like to get out and enjoy the beautiful weather this weekend.

Probably KidSpace, or the playground up at Monte Sano. Those would be our favorites, anyways.

  1. The ones that have grass
  2. The one that's close to your house

Thanks, jenn! We're fairly new here, so that helps a lot.

And HB2,

1. We have grass at our house, so we're not looking specifically for grass. We're looking for fun, safe playground equipment in an area that is safe for small children.

2. We live out in the county so there is no park close to our house. We're coming into town to shop and plan on stopping somewhere to play.

But thanks for the help!

If you'd like to stroll in the park - Big Spring downtown. It's large, open, the tot can run all day long. Word of caution: there's a lake(pond), ducks and fish that a kid might be tempted to see/feed up close. You need two people to handle 2 young kids (been there). And a canister of Lysol wipes to clean the duck poop off shoes. Kidding (kinda).

Another place for 'strolling' in nature is Madison County Nature Trail up on Green Mtn. (of Bailey Cove). It's wooded, and the trail around the lake is pebbles (hard to push a stroller). There's a pavilion with rocking chairs, picninc tables. No playground there, just views, and clean air.

As nice as Kids Space and Dublin Park (Madison, close to Bridge St) are, I would also advise against if you don't have someone accompanying and helping with the toddler. These are enclosed playground structures, with slides, tunnnels, hiding places, castle-like, where you can easily lose a child. Been there too, and learned my lesson, brought company. The toddler is all over the place, the infant is static. How do you split?

What I recommend is the Indian Creek playground. It's off Slaughter in Madison, at the Indian Creek greenway north trailhead. You can stroll on the paved greenway for 3 miles, if you bring a dog, there's a dog park. It's new, open, has equipment for all ages (3 sizes swings, ride-on see-saw, slides, and climbing for older children), picnic pavilion. If you're shopping Bridge St., you cut thru Research Park, in 3 miles you're there. If you go on the trail, almost at the other end there are horses in the adjacent (fenced) pasture. Maybe the kid is lucky to see them close that day.

Also, depending where you're coming from, you can stop at a school (newer), they have playgorunds (i've seen Mill Creek Elem.'s shiny new playground)

  1. Where about do you live?
  2. Where in Huntsville are you going for shopping?
  3. How far out of your way are you willing to go?
