We have some very small brown birds that have built nests on our porch. We want to screen in the porch but don't want to screen it in before the birds are gone; or at least after the chicks have fledged. Does anyone have any idea what type of birds these are and when they may vacate the premises? Or, at least when it is safe to remove the nest snd let them fend for themselves.

Marc

Sounds like Carolina or house wrens. Some took up residence in our grill last year. About three months, IIRC. Nestmaking, eggs, feeding, fledging. Expect one or two of the babies not to make it.

Go to www.enature.com and click on all about birds and specifically wrens. Great site as you can even hear a call and ID a bird. I think they are probably wrens. Just sit back and enjoy the show.

This is also a great site for anything in the animal world.

We had that on our porch for years. It took me some effort to clean that corner after I took it down. It still left some stains.

LOL! Almost Chick-a-baba-q. The parents were bird-brains. The grill is metal and painted black. It worked OK for them in the spring, but when the sunny days with 95 degree temps arrived, they would have been fricasseed if we hadn't put a white towel over it and hosed it down on the really hot sunny days.
