I found out that Chattanooga has their own municipal fiber optic ISP as an option to those residing in the city. I wish Huntsville would do something similar to this. Would you move to a city like Chattanooga or even a city getting Google Fiber if it was the only way to get such speed?

You must've missed the recent news. Hsv Util plans on getting in the fiber optic business, albeit for commercial customers.

I read the same article you did I think. It certainly made me envious. I had a friend who lived in Vegas who said they had municipal wifi. That could be nice too.

I think you'll see more places going this route. As awful as the cable companies are you know they're all eying each other waiting for someone to start charging for good connections so they all can now that net neutrality is gone,

It seems to me that this is one of those no brainer projects that Huntsville would be all over to get done - being the technological mecca it is. Besides the obvious benefits imagine how much more confident "we're better, smarter and faster then Alabama" rhetoric would be once it is up and running.

Then hopefully someone from down here will splice in to the line so we can play WoW all day at high speeds too. Cuz we so gangsta.

I know for a fact breakthrough network technologies are in development in Huntsville and Washington state that will completely change the discussion. Huntsville continues to be the shinning light for Alabama. Without Huntsville, Alabama would be Mississippi!!!

Sadly, Huntsville has been behind on ISP service technology since I moved here. Most of that though is because most ISPs are going to roll new technology out in high density areas.

It was lame and dysfunctional down here until Charter suddenly decided to step up their game. Now 30Mbps is a cheap reality whereas before anything above about 9Mbps was prohibitively expensive for most households.

But gigabit speeds are way more sexy. Instead of wishing four high speed rail to connect the big four metros, or any other pie in the sky dreams, Bentley should make a push to get Alabama connected at ultra high speed internet. What a great PR win that would be for the whole state to send to the nation that we suddenly have cutting edge connectivity.
