With all the new construction around, this doesn't seem possible. Did we lose any major companies or contracts? Shouldn't BRAC have helped? Or are we going to see even more empty aging buildings? Or are the new jobs pulling the median income down?

Eh, I don't know anyone affected to this degree.

Every millennial I know is doing better now than 2009. Every adult I know is the same.

One of my clients left his job for the Army to go back to school, in the mean time he works at Toyota, building V8s, he makes less money, but when he finishes his masters he will return to a desk job.

Other than him, everybody else is doing fine, that I know.

Is anyone making 10% less?

The money I made in real estate went way down from 2009 to 2013. I could attribute some of that to the economy and some of that to transitioning into and focusing on other lines of work. I know a lot of service-industry/self-employed/contract-workers that have taken substantially more than a 10% haircut in the past 4 years.

when you add in things such as lower quality healthcare for more money, cuts to pensions programs, raises that are lower than the COL increases, and how many NASA contractors have had to lose their badges with a prime to take a Jacobs job or none at all, then yes, I know a lot of folks who have been cut at least 10%. More in many cases. Am I better off that I was in 2009? Not at all. I miss Reagan, Clinton, and Bush 2.

And yes, I did say Clinton. He was really really good for my 401k.

The burger flippers might change all that.

"Census officials warned, however, that the 2009 and 2013 figures are not directly comparable because the agency redesigned its survey."

If you ignore that statement and take the numbers at face value, I see a 30% increase in the poverty rate. I'd guess that composes the big chunk of the drop in median salary.

I agree! The 90"a were great for me. Headhunters calling me constantly. Raises were great and yeah....my 401k did very well.

My and my wife's salaries have increased since then, so we haven't taken a hit from that perspective. But considering our insurance is now terrible, any raises we have gotten since then are a mute point. Our take home has been pretty stagnant.
