There's another thread on here with county population estimages for July 2017 that this might be more at home in, but I can't find it.

The question is: Does anybody know when the 2017 city estimates will be released?

I'm going to go out on a limb and make a prediction: Huntsville's population won't increase all that much, and most of what there is will be from additional annexations. Madison will increase the most, but the entire county only went up 6,000 people so there's not a lot to go around. Granted, some of Huntsville and Madison are in Limestone County, so some won't show up in the Madison County estimate. My guess is Huntsville about 195,000 and Madison about 51,000.

We always talk about how fast we're growing here, and we are for Alabama. But I was just nosing around on the census.gov site a couple of days ago, and Harris County, Texas (Houston) increased by about 700,000 since 2010, according to the latest estimates. And almost half of the 4.5M in the county are Hispanic. The DFW metro grew by almost 150K in one year. I wonder what's so attractive about Texas?

Looks like Tuscaloosa has hit the 100,000 milestone. I remember when my hometown of Meridian, MS, was about the same size as Tuscaloosa, and now Meridian has shrunk to about 38,000 (but it looks much larger). Tuscaloosa can thank UAT ( ) and the Alabama football team in great part for that growth ... the University has just about doubled in students since 2000 ... not to mention the Mercedes plant.

The metro is still less than half that of B'ham (assuming Decatur isn't added in after the 2020 census).

If Huntsville wasn't so highway transportation challenged there's no telling what the population would be. I had occasion to travel west on 565 from the Parkway about 2 this afternoon, and traffic eastbound to southbound Memorial Parkway was backed to a standstill for a mile. Not too long ago that only happened in morning and evening rush periods. Being the last day of school and the beginning of the holiday weekend might be a factor too.

Got the Huntsville guess about right but missed Madison by a couple of thousand. There's still room now, but Madison will eventually run out of room since it's literally surrounded by Huntsville now.

Huntsville might break the 200K milestone by the 2020 census, but at the present rate should be slightly under that number.

Yes. But for whatever reason, Birmingham's MSA includes 8 counties. Huntsville's MSA only has two. I don't understand that.
