Looking at buying a vehicle up in TN. Since i'll be a cash buyer, they said they could not collect for tax/title/registration for me. I would do that myself.

For the life of me, I can't figure out how much I'll have to pay for tax, for title fee, for registration fees when I get it to Huntsville.

I can't find any straightforward answer anywhere.

The vehicle is a truck that costs around $14,000. Please help.

Visit your local DMV and tell them what your plans are. They can then tell you what you will owe when and where.
ask the seller to 'loan' you the plates, if they still have them so you can drive 'home'.
Then send the plates back

HTH

I bought my Toyota in TN and was a cash purchase (mine was a new vehicle if that makes a difference I don't know). You don't pay TN tax at all, and not Alabama tax until you register your vehicle in AL and get your tags.

Mine was in Madison County, but you must register the vehicle before you get the title back from Alabama (LM Toyota filed it for me), or you end up paying an extra fine (not in the time frame that you have to register).
You will also have to show proof of insurance when you get your tags/registration.

A friend of mine bought a car in Tennessee a few months ago. He registered the car at the Madison County Courthouse License Department when he got back. They told him how much he owed. He did have to leave and come back because he forgot to bring proof of insurance.

I don't know why somebody was worrying about plates. My friend did not have plates on the car until he registered the car at the courthouse. When he registered the car he transferred the plates from the truck he traded in in Tennessee to the car. He wanted to put the truck plates on the car in Tennessee but I told him that would not be legal at that time.

However, all license department offices are closed until further notice because of Corvid-19 . You will have to resolve this by calling them.

If I remember correctly, when you register the vehicle you are going to pay somewhere around a 2.75 percent Use Tax in lieu of Sales Tax, around $20 for a Title Application, and a small Tag Issuance fee ($25??).

When you buy your tags the next time (which is determined by the First letter of your last name) they will collect Property Tax on the actual purchase price for the months since your car tag was issued, PLUS the Property Tax on the estimated value of the vehicle for the next twelve months of your car tag year. That property tax will be computed by multiplying the purchase price and estimated value respectively by 20 percent and then applying your Taxing District’s millage rate (58 mils for Huntsville) to said amounts for the appropriate months. As always, you will also pay the applicable Tag Issuance fees.

After that, everything settles down and you only pay twelve months of taxes each year, plus the associated admin fees.

Clear as mud?
