This becomes more desirable when a person reaches the age that they no longer feel comfortable driving.

For example, if you live near the Lincoln County Courthouse Square in Fayetteville you pretty much have everything you need within walking distance.

Also note that cost of living in Huntsville has drastically increased over the years and the city has cut bus service to parts of the city that were previously covered.

A person on a fixed income would be hard pressed to be able to sell there home and afford to purchase another one closer to the downtown here.
I certainly get that, but I think you can get most, if not all of that without a scenic courthouse square. It just seems like a very specific requirement for choosing a place to live, but I’m nit picking so I apologize for that.

As far as the question goes, I will also recommend Athens. My daughter and son in law live within walking distance of the square in Athens. They frequently walk down there to eat or spend time at a brewery. There is also a nice farmers market in season. I think there is also an annual Fiddler’s Convention that is very popular. They love it.

Moulton, Ala. (Lawrence County)
Athens, Ala. (Limestone County)
Decatur is Morgan County's seat but we do not have a courthouse square.
Cullman (Cullman County) got a new courthouse around 1980 and no true courthouse square, but it does have a small but lively downtown split by the railroad.
