I was reading a website (don't know the name) and it said that Huntsville is soliciting plans to build a signature tower in downtown at the corner of Jefferson and Holmes. Is this true?

If this tower gets built, I hope it is more than 20 stories. I hope it is a tower that will be a trendsetter for other buildings in the downtown area.

Nah, more like 5-10 at the most, and that's if this recession is prolonged. There are proposals (like a 25-story condo tower and a 20-story hotel) that have been tossed around for years. The new city administration seems more enthusiastic towards downtown growth than the previous one, and any good proposals (not just with this project) will probably get priority in the approval process.

A 20-ish-story high rise is not uncommon in a city of Huntsville's size. Most cities our size (and smaller) have at least one, if not two.

Thanks for the info, James.

Now why does it sound so much MORE credible when it comes from James instead?

When will Huntsville finally realize that its downtown skyline is pathetic compared to cities its size? Huntsville needs to take after Mobile or Birmingham. It's so ironic that a city so prosperous and brilliant has a skyline of city with a population of about 30,000 to 50,000. It's real sad that Cummings Research Park may become the city's true skyline!

If we're measuring skylines by how many tall buildings there are, then it is possible that Huntsville has an amount proportionate to its size, I don't know. Also, if a city has a strong banking/finance and/or government presence, one in which it is a good idea to co-locate these facilities, then I'd imagine the price for the land would increase due to demand and the buildings would grow in size. I don't think there are a lot of banks headquartered in Huntsville and Huntsville isn't the state capital.

But, Huntsville's backbone is that Redstone Arsenal and associated Research Park - sort of offset from the goings on of (a) downtown. Similarly, Los Angeles, up until a few years ago, it's downtown was (and still sort of is) unrepresentative of a city its size.

Big tall buildings aren't built arbitrarily for image and grandeur; They are buiilt by mostly economic forces.

Ok. Well, it's obvious that any tower that's related to defense, military, contract, and engineering will be built in will go up in Redstone Arsenal and in Cummings Research Park. If a tower (20+ stories) is built, what will type of economic force will be there?
