Hi everyone.

My husband and I are considering a move from Kansas to Decatur. He got a job offer that's hard to refuse. We have 3 children, ages 5, 3, and 1. I really just need some real-life info on the area. How are the schools? I'd be looking for an elementary school and preschool. How is the crime rate? Any specific parts of town we should stay away from? Is traffic decent? I realize that Decatur is a town of about 55,000 but this will be quite the change for us. We know live in a town of about 2,000.

Thank you for our help!

Hopefully someone will come along with the info you require soon. I shop in Decatur a lot, I live in a very rural area outside of Decatur and no children at home any longer so I can't really help you out much with your questions. You'll know which area to stay away from pretty quickly. One drive-thru and a quick read of the newspaper will give you an idea. There are a lot of smaller communities outside of Decatur if you would prefer to live there and drive into town for work since you're used to a smaller community. It's a fairly quick drive in from most areas nearby.
The local newspaper is The Decatur Daily. Home - Decaturdaily.com

My sister lived there some years ago when her children were small but they went to a private Christian school so again, no input on the public schools. You can type up addresses in google maps and look at street views and virtually take a walk on there and scope the area out too.

We moved here from San Diego and like it so far. We have 2 kids 5 and 3 and the chestnut grove school is great.

If I were working in Decatur I would probably want to live in the Priceville area

Priceville is fine, but it's quite a drive to shopping. They have lovely brand-new homes out there. Schools are small and rate well.

Look for areas that are in the Eastwood or Walter Jackson Elementary districts, I think you'll find those places most accommodating to your needs. Great schools in those areas and they're quite safe.

You may want to consider Hartselle also if you prefer small town living.

Of course, the OP hasn't been back since September. I think we're talking to the wind.
