So, noticed a little flowering vine/bush thing mixed up with the trees on my property - it has a giant pod dangling from it and is apparently Trumpet Creeper.

Is this common around here? I'm reading up on it and they say its native and a good to draw for huming birds. Somewhere else said it can cause skin iritation - commonly called "cow itch". Is this vine common to cow pastures or something? I notice several name references to cows.

I think I have the tree/bush of life growing in my yard. It's at least 5 different things - a couple weeks ago it was covered in honeysuckle... now, its covered in red-orange "trumpets".

It was dusk when I took my pic so you can't see much of anything, so here's a photo from the internets.

That's cool. I remember as a kid, we used to pull these flowers and suck on the sweet nectar. It will attract hummingbirds.

You're lucky. I have this very healthy and wonderful poison ivy in my back yard.

Lol thank goodness I don't have poison ivy! I swear I get itchy just from walking by.

No kidding. It's been so hot the last few weeks, I have no incentive to get all bundled up to go outside and cut those vines.

We used to roll it up and smoke it.

In California, you might be able to get a pack of 'em at the quick-mart soon.

We have the trumpet vine, virginia creeper, and poison ivy, honeysuckle, plus a few other vines growing around. Cow itch vine is another name for Cissus trifoliata or Sorrelvine, as well as for trumpet vine.

Down here, we'd roll up and smoke "rabbit tobacco."

Cool...nice find. Can always move that to a better spot, let it climb on something structural if too messy on the shrubs.

I brought some Allamanda (yellow trumpet) from FL, thought it was dead but it just started coming up...very happy. Protected by location, survived and will creep up my tallest Crepe Myrtle.

I like your variety.

Knew about Salvia and Passiflora...did not know the alternate use for Trumpet Vine.

I'm planning to put a fence along my property, which runs right behind (probably touching) the bush/tree thing that all this stuff is growing in. From what I've read, there's a good potential that this Trumpet Creeper will spread along the top of the fence which I think is pretty cool.

I just wonder how many bees this thing attracts.
