Help! I saw two flying cockroaches on my back porch last night! I think they were cockroaches, or maybe they were palmetto bugs--are they the same thing? Are they going to come into my house? Will it help to call a pest control company? I have a two year old house and I didn't see these things the last two years.

We have those flying beetle things everywhere this time of year...are you sure it wasn't one of those? Every time we open a door, half a dozen try to fly in for refuge. My cocker spaniel thinks they are a tasty snack...yuck!

Did they look like this?
American cockroach - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I live in an older neighborhood and we get them around here. I see them mainly on the front porch occasionally. From reading about them, they like to live in the cracks and crevices around the foundation and porch. I probably see them on my front porch due to the access to water from watering the plants. Time to spray...

At least you're not in the Phoenix area. Their giant cockroaches come up the drains through the sewer. We lived in very nice areas, yet we had to make sure we plugged the drains at night and not one speck of food or dirty dish could be left out. At least the ones here come from outside. You can use pest control but they are still going to come around, they'll just die on your porch or wherever. Just another part of everyday life situations that are not so pleasant.

Yeah, the ones I saw definitely look like the cockroach picture. Should we spray the porches or would it do any good to call an exterminator. I just can't deal with roaches.

You aren't going to get rid of them using an exterminator unless they get in the house. They won't get in unless they fly in. They aren't real common here so I would wait and see if you see more. Of course, I am sure an exterminator will be more than happy to come out every month for a few $$
