Hi All,

I have a 2010 Hyundai Santa Fe Limited (fully loaded except Nav), 40k miles, Kelly BB valued at about 19,500 right now. 5,100 left on the loan to pay.

It has had transmission troubles, original tranny produced a kick, replacement now produces a hesitation while accelerating (replacement tranny was bad, now scheduled to get replaced again).

Should I call it quits with this car? I want a car that will wast to 150k-200k miles. Not sure if this is it.

If my KBB value is correct, I'd be left with 14,400 cash after trade in maybe. Figure I'd need to take on another loan for atleast 12k to get a decent SUV with miles around 40k or lower.

Are the replacement transmissions covered under warranty and how much longer will you have a warranty?

If you have a good while left on warranty then maybe keep with it. If the next replacement works out the you may feel differently about getting rid of it.

Also, how much of an inconvenience is it when the car is in the shop? Do they hook you up with a loaner car?

All replacements have been covered by warranty.

10 Year / 100k mile powertrain, 10 year / 100k limited (bumper to bumper). I'm almost half way there as I drive a lot but my pace has slowed.

Probably normal inconvenience, they do offer loaner, so far I've survived with wife's car/mass transit when it's in the shop.

Think the trade in value will drop significantly if I wait another 6 months?

You might as well use the warranty, keep in mind that any other vehicle you replace it with could have potential trouble. Nothing is 100%. No sense in taking a financial beating on a trade if you don't have to.

IIRC, if you do decide to sell, the original warranty on a Hyundai can be transferred up to 60K miles to a subsequent owner so you might consider selling it yourself and offering the buyer at least some warranty.

You won't get KBB on this, if the car is in otherwise good condition, trade in would be $13-15,000, if you don't tell them about the transmission issues. Private party, if you want to go that way you might net a little more, but in this price range it can be a hassle, and depending on your state, you'll also get a tax credit on a trade in.

I don't mean to be a rude or unfair, just honest, KBB is not updated enough to follow market trends, and your car simply isn't worth that much on either trade nor private party.

If they keep replacing the transmission, I'd likely keep it a little longer myself, the market is down on SUVs at the moment, so if nothing else, I'd hold on to it for a while.

There is a recall for some of the transmissions in the Santa Fe. The only way to know if yours is in the recall is to take it to the dealer or call them with the VIN. FWIW, these transmissions have been problematic....and that's a good one. Replacements are common with failures far too common even for the replacements. Since you stated you need a vehicle that will last you 200,000 miles+, you need to be looking at something else in a different brand. The transmission issue is not going to go away even if they replace it. Shift solenoids and magnetic couplers are common failures in these units.

Why would you not press dlr/mfg'er for 'replacement' or 'fix' under warranty, other than the slight inconvenience?

No auto trans expert, but they are very complex systems these days, and often the 'electronics pkg' vis a vis the engine mgmt system,OBC is the culprit more so than the 'mechanics' of the physical trans. That, and proper software programming...

I would get it fixed/replaced/'adjusted' and drive it until near end of the longer period warranty; tossing/trading it now is going to be price. The various brands of 'car boards' are filled with stories of 'trans problems': you are not alone, imo.
