I have a 2000 Kia Spectra that will only start up with a jump. It has never died while running and we removed the negative side of the battery to make sure it wasn't a weak alternator. We checked the battery cables and they are clean and tight. Tried to tap on the starter but it still wouldn't start. What could the problem be?
Check the other ends of the battery cables to make sure that they are clean and tight.
If it's manual then check the clutch switch.
Also check the neutral safety switch.
If all of the above are good then check the TSB # 3EN017, this bulletin provides information on a charging system upgrade for 1998-2001 Sephia and 2000-2004 Spectra vehicles equipped with 1.8 liter engines to improve alternator output in high ambient temperatures and severe operating conditions.
They have updated the alternator from 80 amps to 110 amps !!!!
