This is directed towards both natives and transplants! What do you do for a living in your beautiful state?

Natives: Are you doing what you've done all of your life? Has it always been enough to make ends meet?

Transplants: Are you doing the same thing you did in your previous life? Did you need (or just desire) to change careers before you made your move? How easy or difficult was your transition? Did you have a job secured before you arrived and are you in that same job?

Oh, and most importantly, what part of Idaho do you currently live in? Have you always been there? Love it? Hate it?

We're planning to make the hopefully permanent trip across the country by next summer. This has been a long time coming for us. My husband and I are so excited that it gives me butterflies just thinking about it. I wish we could just pick up and leave tomorrow.

My husband is in transportation, was where we previously lived and now as well. Myself, I got out of transportation and am working with animals which happens to be my life's passion. In fact, we're both fortunate to work in our life's passion

We are in Southeast Idaho and totally love it!!

Yes, his position was in place before we moved.

We just moved to the Sandpoint area in July from a small town in upstate NY. My husband freelances and can work from anywhere as long as it's within a couple of hours of an airport. Neither of us had ever even visited North Idaho before we moved, but we did months and months of research before coming to our decision.

So far we love it here. I mean, we wake up every morning and marvel at how lucky we are that this is our home now. Obviously we've only been here for a few months, but somehow I don't foresee that "permanent vacation" feeling going away any time soon. It's really a perfect fit for us.

We moved a business here from Southern California. We have no local customers and we don't rely on the local economy, although we're happy to contribute to it and employ Idahoans.

My story is the same as Sage's except we moved to the Boise area and we have picked up a few local customers. There is an impressive spirit of entrepreneurism in the Treasure Valley. Maybe it pervades the entire state, but I can only speak to my experience in SW Idaho.

Thank you for all of your responses so far!

I can also certainly understand why this thread isn't moving as quickly as I thought it might. I wouldn't want to give away the secrets, either.

Anyone with insight...I will be visiting Boise this Thanksgiving week with my wife and 11 yr. old son. We are from the dreaded SoCal area and we are seriously researching that area to relocate late 2012 when I retire. My wife has been here her whole life and "kinda" wants to move, but fears the anti-Ca. attitudes that are so exhaustively layed out on the Forums. I am originally from the Upstate N.Y. area so I am well aware of what cold weather, nice people, and a slower paced outdoor life style is like. We believe in the mantra, "when in Rome do as the Romans do", and that those who wish to "change" things after they get to Idaho need to stay put in The Land of Fruits and Nuts (and I don't mean Apricots and Almonds!) and keep their misery to themselves! (Yes I am almost ashamed to say I am from SoCal anymore)

Questions if I may: 1) Should I park the Ca. plated motorhome and rent a car with Idaho plates as to avoid the risk of my wife getting the cold shoulder, thus getting a bad taste about moving there? 2) What places or sorts of activies would you recommend visiting that will give us the best feel for what Boise is all about? 3) Any inside info. on where to wet the fly-line while there? I will be armed with everything from my 000 wt to an 8 wt rod...

Cyclingfan, you aren't alone. 47.1% of Idahoans were born outside of Idaho, with at least a sizable portion of those probably having been born in California. 3.8% of Idahoans lived in another state a year ago (source, ACS 2009, US Census).

It's been awhile since I've been to Boise, but in North Idaho, what do you think was the third most common license plate I'd see.....? I don't think the situation would be all that different in the Boise area.

We moved out from CA about 1 year ago....wages are much lower here in Boise and jobs that are available have hundreds of applicants. Average managerial pay is around 40K per year which is really low for the position. Regular jobs often pay around 8-10 per hour. We are planning on retreating back within 6 months. We love the outdoors and the fact that you can own a dream house for $200K and the friendliness of the people here.....but we can't afford to stay. Good luck
