Coeur d'Alene has a Fred Meyer. Within an hour of Schweitzer Mountain (near Sandpoint) and Silver Mountain (Kellogg). 30'ish minutes from Spokane WA. Worth a look.

With the exception of a handful fo select markets, anyeone can buy any amount of acreage if they have the right amount of money and are willing to spend it.

The real estate in the CDA/Sandpoint area is not the least expensive in the country and not the most expensive. The best way of knowing what fits your budget is doing a quick property search.

Boise also has a Fred Meyer if you're looking for a truly larger city nearby.

Idaho Falls has a Fred Meyers and Kelly's Canyon http://www.skikelly.com/ is only about 20 minutes where a lot of the kids snow board and then Grand Targhee Grand Targhee Resort | Ski Vacation | Alta, WY is about 2 hours, it's near Jackson Hole, WY. Clearly Targhee's ski/board season last longer than Kelly's, but Kelly's is just high enough to give the locals some nearby fun.
