Yup. Our challenging terrain was the primary reason why Idaho is so lightly populated. When people emigrated westward to live off the land on new farms, life on the great plains states and on the Pacific coastlands was both a lot easier and more predictable than life here was.

But for those who were up to the challenge, Idaho's fertile soil, abundant timber and minerals could make a bold emigrant a millionaire when a million dollars was really something.

One of the most interesting things to me about our crazy geology is there are always pockets of plenty to be found in the middle of some of the most desolate and imposing parts of our state. Those who could find them prospered, and those who couldn't mostly left as broke and hungry as when they arrived.

Idaho wasn't ever the place for loners. It took teamwork and a lot of cooperation to make the best places productive. And it still does.
