I realize this is more a relocation than a travel advice forum but hoping I can get some helpful hints.

My wife and I are planning to drive up (from Utah) on Thursday before the Labor day weekend for tent camping and hiking - and are looking for advice and recommendations.

Hiking: I see Sawtooth and Whitecoud wilderness. Which is the better target for hiking. We are into moderately strenuous day hikes (ideally with elevation).

Location: I see see Ketchum and Stanley as the towns around which to find the campground around. Any recommendations on that.

Camping recommendations: We do not have reservations. I see a lot of forest service campgrounds that seem to have first-***-first-serve availability. Any recommendations? Don't particularly care for it to be near water - but flush toilets would be nice. Higher elevation might be nicer for cooler temperatures.

Any other advice would be welcome as well. Many thanks!

For natural beauty, Stanley hands down. Around Ketchum is extremely pretty too, but that is Sun Valley. Not rural in that valley once you get south to Ketchum. North of Ketchum towards Galena Pass is getting quite remote.

Labor Day there is going to be busy, busy, busy. Can you get reservations at all? I would. If not, be ready to camp off the forest roads, or in a dispersed camping area, where you are on your own, which is allowed with certain restrictions.

Elevation will be no problem. Stanley is at 6400' at the lowest point in that valley, and everything goes up from there. The Sawtooths are steeper and more precipitous in areas than the WhiteClouds, but that is a general characterization. You can wear yourself out in either!

You can get some groceries in Stanley. The last 'full service' grocery stores will be in the Hailey/Ketchum area on your likely route up ID75.

Wish I was going! I have not heard much about fires and smoke out there this year, so hopefully your views and vistas will be brilliant!

There was a big fire north of McCall two weeks ago, but it sounded like they were getting it under control.

About 10 years ago my friend and I backpacked in the Sawtooths about 20 miles north of Sun Valley on Highway 75 on a Fourth of July weekend. We hiked up to an alpine lake and had the entire thing to ourselves. Very nice area, thick snowpacks on the peaks surrounding the lake, small bull trout in the creeks.

Interesting. I was in McCall and Big Creek exactly two weeks ago. I didn't see any sign of recent fire.

The fire was the Nethker fire and was located just south of the Burgdorf Hot springs. Our ATV group was camping/riding about 2 1/2 miles from the hot springs off Burgdorf road and we noticed the smoke Sunday Aug 4. I left around 3pm and a helicopter was working the fire at that time.
