it makes sense. ideally, they would go after who they could. since they cant, they prioritize.

i have no problem with this at all.

and illegal immigrants in the US are now closer to 11 million. they went down this year.
But once an illegal alien is caught at a checkpoint why shouldn't they be deported asap regardless of whether or not they are a dangerous criminal? I mean they are here in violation of our immigration laws so why release them back into our society? How difficult would it be to process the paperwork quickly and deport them quickly so they aren't detained long in our custody?

You would be wrong about your 11 million number also. Most reliable sources including BP stats claim that there is more like 20-30 million illegals here so an 8% decrease would still mean that there are many more still here besides 11 million. Add to that the number of anchor babies and overall our population has increased immensely directly through the act of illegal immigration.

Actually I read somewhere (the link escapes me atm) that MOST of the fines of employers and deportation of these criminal aliens during THIS adminstration were the result of efforts that occurred under PREVIOUS administrations - you are aware I assume that deportation hearings aren't an overnight affair?

How unexpected.

"The number of immigrants being detained in the United States has doubled in the past decade, to 369,000 annually. There are now about 248,000 cases awaiting review in backlogged immigration courts, according to the Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse at Syracuse University, which tracks immigration statistics.

"The increases have triggered huge logistical problems and exposed successive administrations to charges that those who are in the country illegally, a violation of civil statutes, are being exposed to unnecessarily harsh conditions.
Simultaneously, ICE officials maintain, clogged immigration courts divert officials from identifying, tracking down and deporting illegal immigrants who have committed violent crimes and other offenses."

IOW, not as simple, or as simpleminded, as you all... would like it to be.
Then the RATIONAL answer would be to speed up the PROCESS, not just open the cell doors and let them all leave............

This makes no sense to me. What do clogged courts have to do with ICE's duty to enforce immigration law whether they be violent or non-violent illegals? ICE isn't an immigration court. ICE and the immigration courts have seperate duties. The problem isn't ICE but the courts not processing the paperwork for a quick deportation of the non-violent ones.

The assumption being, that only those apprehended for violent crimes are violent criminals. If we wait until after an illegal has committed a violent crime, how many women/children will be raped, and how many lives will be lost? If they are here illegally, they should be deported, period.

Our immigration laws do not distinguish between violent and non-violent illegal aliens. Thus, the Feds are guilty of dereliction of duty by refusing to apprehend so-called non-violent illegals.

and all their information is still in AFIS. even those caught at the border (without cases) get put into AFIS.
If they dismiss the cases of 17,000 without a hearing, how do they know they aren’t releasing someone guilty of committing a violent crime?

Even a pro-illegal immigration attorney on CSPAN admitted the number of illegals is grossly underestimated. In 1986 they estimated 1 million, but the actual number was almost 3 times that amount. Chances are our current number is also at least 3 times the estimated number. Heck, there are at least 11 million in CA alone.

The truth is, we have no idea how many are here.

Huh? If someone hasn't been charged, how can he be tried?

"It comes amid a push by ICE to focus on illegal immigrants who have committed crimes, rather than seek to deport all illegal immigrants. Officials say the shift is needed to reduce massive clogs in the nation's immigration courts — where detainees wait for months or years before their cases are decided — and to use deportation as a tool for public safety."

Exactly! That would be like not prosecuting American petty thieves because the law needs to go after bank robbers instead. All criminals need to be prosecuted regardless of the seriousness of the crime. In fact in all fairness we should demand that our American petty thieves and other non-violent criminals be left alone.
