Ronald Reagan is the only one who ever did anything about it. In 1986 he signed a bill which was supposed to grant amnesty to a million and a half of them and before all was said and done six million had become citizens...mostly with illegal papers. Think about how many are here now because of that six million twenty years ago.

They were granted amnesty because it benefited corporations as well as increased the amount of taxes to be taken. It lowered wages.
And they used this line that there were not enough of my generation to take care of the Boomers when they retired. Of course, now the Boomers (not all) have made all their money and find some kind of irreparable harm done to their national identity.

That is about all the feeling I have for this.

So, apparently, Ronald Reagan was good at passing laws...but not so good at enforcing them.

The illegal immigration started in 1492. The Native Americans fought it for a long time, but lost.

Illegal immigration is the crack cocaine of the American economy. Everybody complains about it but everybody also benefits in the way of lower food cost, lower construction cost, and lower cost in just about any good or service where illegal immigrant labor is a major component. If Americans REALLY want eliminate or severely curtail illegal immigration they have to be willing to pay higher prices for goods and services.

If politicians REALLY wanted to attack illegal immigration they would make the fine for hiring an illegal immigrant so severe and enforcement so vigorous business would be deterred from hiring them.

Here's my proposal for stopping illegal immigration:

Make the fine for any business that hires an illegal immigrant $100,000 per immigrant per incident. If the business was unable to pay the fine at the time put the business in federal receivership and use the profits from the business to pay the fine. Then return control back to the owners. In conjunction with this, step up the number of inspections and sweeps of businesses so that the issue isn't if a business is going to undergo an inspection for illegal aliens but when.

Number two, cut defense spending and boost the budget of the Border Patrol. Stop making them the red headed step-child of federal law enforcement and put some serious teeth into securing our borders. Step up manpower, pay and training. Start dropping special trained teams into remote areas to do long range reconnaissance patrols for multiple days. Start doing things like AWACS and UAV type over flights of border areas KNOWN to places where infiltration is a problem. Border security IS national security. This nation has not done anything near what is capable of doing in terms of turning up the heat in the way of manpower and resources to protect our borders.

It is nonsense that we would have to pay more for our purchases in this country without illegal alien labor. The employers only pocket the profits from them. They pass little to nothing in the way of cheaper prices onto we the consumer. Besides, since our wages have been lowered due to illegal labor how are we saving or gaining anything?

I do however agree with your last two paragraphs as to how to stop illegal immigraton but I would add that implementing e-verify would decrease the manpower needed for raids. Besides removing the incentive of jobs, we should also rescind birthright citizenship and disallow any taxpayers benefits to illegal aliens.

You're not saving money having illegals in this country. For example: Having illegals working on your house is NOT saving constructions costs, what happens is the general contractor uses the illegals, pays them less and pockets the money himself. He does NOT pass the savings on to you.

Exactly...he/she hires them off the books so the only thing their labor costs him/her is exactly what they earn per hour. Since he/she knows they're illegal, he/she knows they will not be talking to anyone about it.

As has already been pointed out...if the government wanted things to change they could easily stop most of it in short order. Simply begin to enforce laws which are already on the books.
