Veterans challenge Boston’s plan to hire Spanish-speakers - The Boston Globe

I read that article on the Globe this morning.

So what is the purpose of hiring "Spanish" speaking firefighters in a country where English is the language spoken?

Why can't people just learn English? Why do we cater to them so much?

Boston has a huge Asian population as well but the city is not hiring candidates who speak Cantonese / Mandarin, are they...? What about Russian? Italian?

Why Spanish?

Because they've won; they have gotten the ear of FedGov and are getting their way.
Hispanics are the fastest growing minority. In Texas they are the majority now but still labeled "minority".

It is directly due to the millions of illegal alien Spanish speakers in our country now. Firefighters and police officers are now being required to learn Spanish in order to keep their jobs and so are the new applicants for such jobs. It is just despicable to me how illegal aliens are allowed to affect our ability to gain employment in our own country.

All other immigrants had not problem learning the language of this country.

It's gotten way past absurd. It's now all about bringing in the least intelligent, the least capable of learning and forcing Americans to assimilate to their culture since they are unable of assimilating with ours.

Which is odd because the second gen Hispanics I know hardly even bother with Spanish. It's only the first gen with illegal alien Parents that speak it heavily along with the illegals themselves.

Yesterday I drove past a Lowes in the South Shore of Boston and saw a "We're Hiring Sign" in English and SPANISH.

I am confused. I thought one had to be a citizen or legal immigrant of this country to work there...which in turn would mean you can speak English.

Why would they suddenly have "We're Hiring" Signs in Spanish?

Time about somebody called ICE and tell them that store you saw may be hiring illegal immigrants.

Well then something else must be sparking this continued use of the language. Even manufacturers are putting a Spanish language side to their product packaging.

Every place you call is Press 1 for English, etc.

The wouldn't do that if the use of the language was decreasing.

What are the English language requirements for legal immigrants to come to the U.S.?...

I see Americans that can't speak English...

But it would be done if a manufacturer is trying to grow their product line in multiple markets and other countries...

Typically what a business has to do to survive...

Sounds pretty rational to me...
