Mail to employers would outline new Homeland Security rules, penalties

SAN FRANCISCO - The Social Security Administration cannot start sending out letters to employers next week containing notification of more serious penalties for knowingly hiring illegal immigrants, a federal judge ruled Friday.

Ruling on a lawsuit by the nation’s largest federation of labor unions against the U.S. government, U.S. District Judge Maxine Chesney granted a temporary restraining order prohibiting the so-called “no-match” letters from going out as planned starting Tuesday.

The AFL-CIO lawsuit, filed this week, claims that new Department of Homeland Security rules outlined in accompanying letters threaten to violate workers’ rights and unfairly burden employers. Chesney said the court needs “breathing room” before making any decision on the legality of new penalties aimed at cracking down on the hiring of illegal immigrants.

Now if these foreign workers are taking American jobs why are the unions trying to stop the government?

I love how ONE judge can stop what the majority wants/demands

ONE man w/that power ...kind of reminds me in Nevada we had passed no smoking in restaurants etc law... THE NEVADA CITIZENS voted that law into play and because ONE judge in Vegas didn't quite agree with it he halted that law until HE made the decision...

The unions have been pushing big to unionize illegals. They see illegals as a vast source of untapped union dues.

This ruling shouldn't surprise anyone familar with federal judges out west.

Default good cop bad cop

Good cop, bad cop and dog and pony. This was expected. Our government wants illegals here. The end result is they find a way to make us think they dont and then do the opposite. Look at the end result, not all the "debates"

I'm not sure that is true, but we do need more workers here in the US. The unemployment rate is low enough (4.6%); this is considered by economists to be full employment. Virtually any native born American who is able and willing to work will find a job today Sept. 1, 2007. The problem with full employment is that it is a risk factor to rising inflation. Encouraging immigration to this country will ensure that we will have a steady supply of labor that will offset the possibility of runaway inflation. Either that or we outsource jobs to low cost countries.

The other demographic shift that supports immigration is that Americans are an aging population. Soon we won't have enough workers available to pay into Social Security. Where will we get the money that our aging fellow Americans expect to receive during their retirement years?

The point being, economics is all about tradeoffs. You can not expect to have a strong and prosperous economy that provides benefits (like Social Security and low inflation, among others) if you create an atmosphere that is hostile to immigrants. You are just shooting yourself in the foot.

The issue here is illegal aliens, not legal immigrants.
