Yeap.

If you have to break the law to stay in business and compete, then you have officially been pushed out by the invisible hand of the market. "The only way I can stay in business is to sell counterfeit versions of CDs and DVDs! I can't compete with Wal-Mart if I buy legitimate versions at market price!"

So long. Pick up your blue vest and give out stickers at the Wal-Mart entrance for all I care.

Aye, it is true that when large businesses come in, smaller ones tend to go the way of the Dodo Bird. However, that is the natural cycle. Besides, how is Wal-Mart a direct competitor of a Burger Joint? Even if McDonalds, Wendy's, AND Burger King moved in next door, if the Mom and Pop joint had good Burgers, they would still do more than enough business to stay up (I know I would rather spend $10 on a good burger over $5 on McDonalds any and every day). If there business failed because a large corporation moved in, it is their fault for not offering something that the big business could not. I know it's a bit cold-hearted to say, but it's the truth.

You brought up a good point.

It is not always 'bad' that some mom and pops go out of business when a Wal-Mart (or Sears, Montgomery Wards, K Mart, etc. in the past) comes to town.

Not all mom and pops supply good service and/or products. In the case of food places; in some cases there is the risk of food poisoning, etc. whereas a chain outlet has much more to lose by being 'chintzy'.

What I do like is the so-called 'Ace/True Value' plan where a bunch of 'indie' hardware stores pool their buying with the proviso that the stores are decorated in corporate schemes.

Knowingly brought in undocumented workers for construction.

(Covington, KY) A Nashville man who knowingly hired illegal immigrants to work for his subcontracting businesses in Boone County will spend 18 months in federal prison. That was the ruling of US District Court Judge David Bunning on Thursday. Robert Pratt admitted to hiring more than 25 but less than 99 undocumented workers for drywall and framing in Northern Kentucky. Pratt was arrested along with others during a raid on Fisher Homes construction sites in May of 2006.

Also sentenced today were Howard Pratt and Jacqueline Pratt-Medina, his son and daughter. H. Pratt received 1 year in prison and Pratt-Medina got probation, with 6 months of home incarceration. Jose Trejo-Soto, a contractor for Pratt, also received a year sentence for setting up his own business and hiring illegal workers.

Three illegal immigrants who worked as crew chiefs got 5 month sentences and a US citizen got probation as well. During the sentencing, R. Pratt told Judge Bunning he knew what he was doing was illegal but everyone else was doing it and he figured if he got caught, he'd only get a slap on the hand as punishment.

Several family members, some from Mexico and others in the country illegaly cried during the sentencing but all were shocked when Robert Pratt was escorted out of the courtroom by a US Marshall to two deputies waiting with handcuffs.

FANTASTIC NEWS . . . hopefully, this is only the beginning!
Awesome...this needs to keep happening all over the country, but I'm glad these scum were made examples of; keep it up!

Really? I just read an article in the L.A. times mentioning border apprehensions are down 20%, and illegal immigrants going back to their homelands is also down. I will find the article if you want.
