Aiding and Abetting is a Federal Crime.
Section 8 USC 1324(a)(1)(A)(iv)(b)(iii)
"Any person who . . . encourages or induces an alien to . . . reside . . . knowing or in reckless disregard of the fact that such . . . residence is . . . in violation of law, shall be punished as provided . . . for each alien in respect to whom such a violation occurs . . . fined under title 18 . . . imprisoned not more than 5 years, or both."
Section 274 felonies under the federal Immigration and Nationality Act, INA 274A(a)(1)(A):
A person (including a group of persons, business, organization, or local government) commits a federal felony when she or he:
* assists an alien s/he should reasonably know is illegally in the U.S. or who lacks employment authorization, by transporting, sheltering, or assisting him or her to obtain employment, or
* encourages that alien to remain in the U.S. by referring him or her to an employer or by acting as employer or agent for an employer in any way, or
* knowingly assists illegal aliens due to personal convictions.
I realize you didn't read the article carefully. There were business owners who were unaware some of their previous workers were illegal. Business owners can't tell if a worker is legal or not based on paper work.

I'm not going to get into a shouting match, and I'm not afraid to confront the issue of myself hiring illegals. I'm sure the vultures will attack this. I hire illegal immigrants because there's not enough legal workers to do the job. I shouldn't have to close my business and lose all revenue, because I don't have enough workers. I've already told you folks I pay them $14 an hour, so I'm clearly not using illegal immigrants for my personal profit. There are employers who treat illegal immigrants as human beings, I one of them.

There is no excuse for hiring illegal aliens. There are plenty of legal citizens available to work in whatever position one may have. I suppose JesusisLord would have agreed with the plantation owners who claimed they 'needed' slaves to survive.
His church was a plaintiff in two lawsuits filed by the National Coalition of Latino Clergy and Christian Leaders that challenged the constitutionality of the law. Both were dismissed, the latest last month when U.S. District Judge James Payne ruled that the plaintiffs, who included illegal immigrants, didn't have standing to sue. He said they would not have been hurt if they had not violated U.S. law.
The coalition says it will appeal.
