Yes, I believe all immigrants should be proficient in english. If we quit accomodating them, they will quit expecting accomodation. I'd start with all government assistance forms should be in english, filled out on site, and no translators allowed!
Correct me if I am wrong but I understand the exam is only given in English both verbal Q&A and written parts.
What baffles me is that at my high school, and I know many high schools in CA are the same way, it was REQUIRED take Spanish, yet Americans are chastized for feeling that those entering our country should be required to learn English. Just one of many double standards in our society.

The exam? I was referring to the Medicaid/welfare application. We have the forms and instruction booklets available at work. They are published in both english and spanish. I think they should not be published in spanish because if you immigrated here legally you should already be proficient in spanish and because part of the immigration process required employment you shouldn't need public assistance.
The law has been tested and tried in the courts numerous times.
Proposals have been put forth to require English be enforced in some manner or other as the 'official' language.
Each time, whether in the courts or in the legislative process, the proposals have been defeated, and the laws have been upheld.
Other than providing a forum to complain, or blow off steam, I see little constructive use in a few message boarders rehashing the exact same complaints day after day.
When this thread drops down the page, another will take it's place and everyone will say the same things.
Is mere fueling and feeding on a sense of unavailing frustration attractive in some sense?

If the La Raza crowd and their friends keep up this multicultural nonsense---------then the possibility of English becoming the official language may just come to pass.

Oops that was supposed to read Proficient in ENGLISH!
There are plenty of people in the world who would like to come to the USA. We certainly don't need the ones who are too lazy/unwilling to learn even some English.
Those who speak English should be given preference in immigration -- but at the very least, immigration should be limited to those who truly want to become American. It should not just be for money and/or welfare programs but a real desire to become a part of this nation.
Yes, we are too soft and need to change our ways. English or nothing.
Take down the all other signs and force them to read, write and speak our langauge. It's time to put an end to their changing of our ways.
