FRESNO, Calif. — Days after Donald Trump won the White House vowing to deport millions of people in the country illegally and fortify the Mexican border, California farmer Kevin Herman ordered nearly $600,000 in new equipment, cutting the number of workers he'll need starting with the next harvest.

Trump's deportation vow spurs California farmers into action

Illegal aliens: it's over. Now just go HOME. The American people have spoken.

The excuse of "the crops rotting in the fields with nobody to harvest them" is a lie.

Yep. There's an unlimited number of temporary agricultural work visas available for farmers who need/want them:

No need for illegals whatsoever.

Less than 5% of illegals work in agriculture anymore.
That's how embedded they've become in doing the jobs that Americans will do. -- all areas of construction,
Food processing, restaurant work, hotel work, handman work, landscaping, painting, house cleaning, heavy equipment handling, even local government jobs, etc etc.

He could also use the unlimited visas for legal workers. Tells me that he was employing illegal aliens instead.

Just imagine the huge economic benefits of all these agricultural capital expenditures!

If there really were a labor shortage, there are plenty of able-bodied people on welfare in California we could cut off and send to work in the fields.

Glad to see that some farmers are finally coming around to the idea of mechanization. They, previously, weren't motivated to do so as illegals have become a dime a dozen.

The article also interviews a farmer who told his illegals that he will fight for them. This sleazy, despicable farmer is one of those who refuses to use the guest worker program and instead opts for cheap, exploitable illegal labor. Although the article doesn't specifically say that, reading between the lines it is clear that's what's up with the sleazy farmer. If he was using the guest worker program, then there would be no reason to tell his employees that he would protect them and fight for them.

The illegal aliens can and will push back but the laws aren't going to change. If they push hard enough the Federal Government will push back harder.

Notice that the guy was able to order over half a million in equipment just days after the election. But he couldn't afford to pay a decent wage to legal immigrants and citizens? These "farmers" are not Old MacDonald in overalls; they're greedy agribusiness millionaires addicted to cheap labor. They want to meet with Trump to "educated" him. Gee, I'll bet business people in a lot of industries wish they could meet with the president to convince him they should be allowed to cheat and break the law! I hope Trump DOES meet with them, and it goes the same way his meeting with the journalists went.

Bravo! I am so tired of the "who will pick the crops?" in California. Tis true: less than 5% illegals pick crops plus there are agricultural visas available. I grew up in Northern California. Back then, in the 1950s and 1960s, braceros came in to work for the ranchers, who housed them on their properties so they didn't wander into the towns. I remember big flatbed trucks driving on the country roads full of Braceros hootin and a hollaring.
