So... a 40% drop in the effectiveness of the department?
This statistic is quite vague.
If the rate of illegal immigration is constant, then this would indicate extremely poor enforcement of our borders.
If the rate of illegal immigration dropped, then this would indicate that illegal immigration has slowed a bit.

What has Trump got to do with it?

Probably nothing. The man has been in office for 2 months and the only people who are afraid are the legal/illegal ones ALREADY in our borders so... Administrations moves slow and Trump is all talk at this point.

OP... That statistic doesn't mean what you think it means.

As a matter of fact, that news headline is REALLY misleading...

This doesn't means border crossings dropped by 40%. It means the number of people who were stopped while trying to cross the border dropped by 40%.

NumberOfBorderCrossingsMonthly * .4 < NumberOfBorderCrossingsMonthly

That's the exact INVERSE of the headline.

IMO, 40% fewer crossings of late would mean that since Trump is cracking down on illegal immigration internally that illegal aliens are more afraid to come here. I don't know how anyone could take it any other way.

That's a gross assumption.

50% chance of being right, 50% chance of being wrong.

Illegal immigration could be steadily climbing for all we know.

Stops dropped by 40%.

That could mean illegal immigration has found a substantial flaw in the system and are exploiting it or it is responding to external forces (immigration policy, depletion of capacity/market satiation, alternatives to the US rising (Brazil, maybe?)).

Even so, illegal immigration has been declining since 2000 so...

Trump hasn't done **** really.

Legal immigrants won't do those jobs? There are unlimited visas for legal, foreign crop pickers. When a food processing plant was raided for illegals a few years ago Americans lined up around the corner for those jobs. Imagine who were doing all those jobs for a fair wage before millions of cheap illegals flooded our border.

Makes you wonder why then Mexico and US illegal alien supporters have had their panties all in a twist over Trumps immigration policy.
All I've been hearing is how worried illegals are now that Trump is president and how all immigrants and even citizens are going to be mass deported.
If Trump's new policy on enforcement isnt doing **** whats all the fuss about?

Don't forget the Americans leaving the US and moving TO Mexico. We bought a home last month in Lake Chapala and will be moving into it in April.

To quote Rick Perry: Adios, Mo-fo's!!

How do you explain this then?

Trump Effect? Smugglers Raise Price for Sneaking People Across U.S. Border - NBC News

It costs $8,000 to get smuggled in now. Obama's bargain basement rate was $3500. What other reason can you concoct?

Do you believe that smugglers honestly price the cost of illegal immigration?

Emphasis on the word "honestly".

I honestly believe the price would increase if risk increased.

What other reason? They'll use any fairytale to extract more money from the people. Personally I don't believe a word this admin tries to see the public. Its all alternate facts and figures.
