Section 287(g)
http://www.ice.gov/partners/287g/Section287_g.htm

"ICE ACCESS (Agreements of Cooperation in Communities to Enhance Safety and Security) provides local law enforcement agencies an opportunity to team with ICE to combat specific challenges in their communities.

The 287(g) program is only one component under the ICE ACCESS umbrella of services and programs offered for assistance to local law enforcement officers.

ICE developed the ACCESS program in response to the widespread interest from local law enforcement agencies who have requested ICE assistance through the 287(g) program, which trains local officers to enforce immigration law as authorized through section 287(g) of the Immigration and Nationality Act."

Section 287(g)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Section_287(g)

"Recognizing this enforcement challenge, federal authorities support the use of the § 287(g) program, which offers a middle ground that maintains federal control over immigration law generally but facilitates some limited local law enforcement actions that are coordinated with Immigration and Customs Enforcement. While this solution is not a complete derogation of federal power, nor is it likely to end illegal immigration, it serves the national need to protect the best interests of the country while promoting state interest in maintaining an environment of legal workers and residents."

I was wondering how some were arresting illegal aliens (i.e., a sheriff's office) even when ordinances exist (whether voluntary or forced upon them via courts) prohibiting even asking immigration status unless it was a felon, etc., in effect, barring local law enforcement from immigration enforcement under the premise this is Federal Jurisdiction.

I believe section 287(g) provides some answers to that question.

For your local law enforcement :
