If you would read the article instead of just the headline, you'd see what they are doing. Many Mexicans heading for the US are illiterate. It is easier to teach people to read and write in a language they already know, and this is a LITERACY program to teach people to read an d write. I would not advise you to go around loudly proclaiming that you are against people learning how to read and write. By reading the article, you will also see that the courses have two objective. Reading/writing Spanish, and also learning English.
If you want to object to illegal immigration, go ahead, but please do not use a genuine effort to improve education as a springboard to showcase your prejudicial hatred of people.

I can't claim that I'm against people of ANY nationality obtaining a basic education, however why can't the illegals that are given this opportunity use their newfound education to find opportunity back in Mexico? Why must the US bear the brunt of having yet another illegal competing with the rest of the US workforce for employment?

Agreed. Furthermore, why doesn't the Mexican government concentrate on improving literacy, employment opportunities, and a better standard of living within Mexico? Why should they feel entitled to dump their illiterates on us?

Because mexico doesn't want their illiterate, abundantly breeding, whiney, needy, criminal butts either. Yet they come here waiving the mexican rag as if it's their country and it loves them. If it wasn't so pathetic it would be amusing. They protest the raids because they know if they are deported, they've used up the last of their 9 lives.

because Calderon is an IDIOT.
Far too stupid to even improve the lives of his people by ONE IOTA ! ! !
How can we complain about our leaders, . . . when they are SAINTS and Geniuses compared to that incompetent fool.
As someone that has volunteered several times as an ESL teacher, the hardest students to teach were those illiterate in their own language -- regardless of which language that was. The more literate they were in their mother tongue, the better they were at learning English.

And Obama aids and abets Calderon. Afterall, the agenda here is to turn us into the 3rd world melting pot.
